How the viscous subrange determines inertial rangeproperties in turbulence shell

چکیده

We calculate static solutions of the 'GOY' shell model of turbulence and do a linear stability analysis. The asymptotic limit of large Reynolds numbers is analyzed. A phase diagram is presented which shows the range of stability of the static solution. We see an unexpected oscillatory dependence of the stability range upon lg , where is the viscosity. This eeect depends upon the discrete structure of the shell model and goes to zero as the separation between the shells is brought to zero. These ndings show how viscous eeects play a role in determining inertial properties of shell models and give some hints for understanding the eeects of viscous dissipation upon real turbulence.

Scale resolved intermittency in turbulence

The deviations Scm (“intermittency corrections”) from classical (“K41”) scaling c,==m/3 of the mth moments ( 1 u(p) I”) in high Reynolds number turbulence are calculated, extending a method to approximately solve the Navier-Stokes equation described earlier. It is suggested to introduce the notion of scale resolved intermittency corrections Sk,(p), because these &L&(p) are found to be large in ...

Assessing the Effects of Atmospheric Stability on the Inertial Subrange of Surface Layer Turbulence using Local and Global Multiscale Approaches

The conceptual framework for modelling the inertial subrange is strongly influenced by the Richardson cascade, now the subject of various reinterpretations. One apparent departure from the Richardson cascade is attributed to boundary conditions influencing large-scale motion, which in turn, can directly interact with smaller scales thereby destroying the universal statistical scaling attributes...

Anomalous scaling in a shell model of helical turbulence

In a helical flow there is a subrange of the inertial range in which there is a cascade of both energy and helicity. In this range the scaling exponents associated with the cascade of helicity can be defined. These scaling exponents are calculated from a simulation of the GOY shell model. The scaling exponents for even moments are associated with the scaling of the symmetric part of the probabi...

The viscous-convective subrange in nonstationary turbulence

The similarity form of the scalar-variance spectrum at high Schmidt numbers is investigated for nonstationary turbulence. Theoretical arguments show that Batchelor scaling may apply only at high Reynolds numbers. At low Reynolds numbers, Batchlor scaling is not possible unless the turbulence is stationary or the enstrophy decays asymptotically as t. When this latter condition is satisfied, it i...

Developed Turbulence: From Full Simulations to Full Mode Reductions.

Developed Navier-Stokes turbulence is simulated with varying wave-vector mode reductions. The flatness and the skewness of the velocity derivative depend on the degree of mode reduction. They show a crossover towards the value of the full numerical simulation when the viscous subrange starts to be resolved. The intermittency corrections of the scaling exponents zp of the pth order velocity stru...
